What Is Adoption?
Adoption is the legal process of transferring the rights and responsibilities of being a parent from a birth couple to an adoptive couple. The child becomes permanently and legally part of the adoptive family.
What Are The Adoption Plans?
There are three types of adoption plans. After finalization, the amount of contact you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family determines which plan you would choose.
Open
The majority of adoptions today are open. An open adoption means you and the adoptive family exchange identifying information, such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. Together, you decide the contact you want to have with one another.
This plan allows you to tell your child you chose adoption out of love for them. It connects the child to their heritage and answers important questions they may have.
Semi-Open
This plan is perfect for a woman who wants some contact with her child but also wants to remain private. You share first names with the adoptive couple, but any other communication is through a third party, such as your adoption agency or attorney.
Closed
Very few adoptions are completely closed today. If you prefer complete privacy, you should select this plan, and your adoption specialist will select an adoptive couple for you.
No identifying information is shared, and you won’t have further contact with your child or the adoptive family.
Can I Choose The Adoptive Parents?
Yes, if you choose an open or semi-open adoption plan, you are the one to choose the adoptive parents. You discuss with your adoption coordinator the family and the environment you wish your child to have. The coordinator shows you bios of potential adoptive couples to choose from.
If you are matched, you can meet one another before your baby is born.
